What is a Mediterranean diet?

A Mediterranean diet incorporates the traditional healthy living habits of people from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, including Italy, France, Greece and Spain.





Mediterranean cuisine varies by region and has a range of definitions, but is largely based on vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, cereal grains, olive oil and fish.

The Mediterranean diet has been associated with good health, including a healthier heart. A 2013 study found that people following a Mediterranean diet had a 30% lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

You can make your diet more Mediterranean-style by:
  •     eating plenty of starchy foods, such as bread and pasta
  •     eating plenty of fruit and vegetables
  •     eating some fish
  •     eating less meat
  •     choosing products made from vegetable and plant oils, such as olive oil

The diet is similar to the government's healthy eating advice set out in the eatwell plate, which shows the foods needed for a balanced, healthy diet.

This includes everything you eat during the day, including snacks. So, try to stick to these guidelines:
  •     Base your meals on starchy carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, rice or potatoes. Choose wholegrain varieties wherever you can, or eat potatoes with their skins on for more fibre.
  •     Eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day. Find out how you can get your 5 A DAY.
  •     Choose some lean protein, which can be meat, fish, eggs, beans or pulses and other non-dairy sources.
  •     Include some milk and dairy foods, such as cheese and yoghurt. These are great sources of protein and calcium.
  •     Have only a small amount of foods high in fat and/or sugar, or eat them less often.

It's a good idea to try to get this balance right every day, but you don't need to do it at every meal. You might find it easier to get the balance right over a longer period, such as over the course of a week.

You can make your day-to-day life with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) easier by going to physical therapy. It helps you move better, get stronger, and may even mean less pain.

To get started, ask your rheumatologist for a referral. She may have a physical therapist that she often works with. You can also check the American Physical Therapy Association’s web site (apta.org) for licensed physical therapists in your area.

Set Goals

Think about the things that you most want to improve. Is it your weekend hike, picking up your kids (or grandkids), going up and down stairs, pushing a grocery cart, or reaching up to blow-dry your hair?

Tell your physical therapist about it.

“We can teach you moves and stretches to help improve your strength and range of motion, which will allow you to maintain those important daily functions,” says physical therapist Jan Richardson, PhD, professor emeritus at Duke University School of Medicine.

Push Your Limits -- Safely

You might learn in physical therapy that you can do more than you think.

“In the past, it was thought that RA patients should stay away from high-impact types of aerobic exercise, like running, as well as weight lifting, because it would exacerbate [worsen] the disease,” Richardson says.  But now it’s clear that people with RA who do those types of things “actually have healthier joints, even as they grow older.”

Make sure you get aerobic exercise (cardio), because RA can mean you’re more likely to get heart disease, says Maura Iversen, MPH, a professor of physical therapy, movement, and rehab sciences at Northeastern University.

What activities sound like fun to you? “It could be tai chi classes, swimming, or yoga,” Richardson says. “One program won’t necessarily fit the bill for every patient, so work with your physical therapist to find something that works for you.”

Listen to Your Body

You need a good balance between rest and exercise. Physical therapy is a great place to tune in to that.

The first step is to learn the difference between a symptom of joint inflammation and muscle soreness from exercise.

“If your hands or wrists feel hot, swollen, and painful, that’s different from an ache that you’d feel after starting a new exercise program,” Richardson says. “Your physical therapist can help you learn to distinguish the two over time and determine when it’s OK to ramp up your activity and when to cut back.”

    Water, as needed


Directions

    Peel the banana and orange, and break them into a few large pieces. Place them in a large-capacity blender, along with the cooked and cooled quinoa, camu-camu powder, crushed ice, and guava nectar.
    Secure the lid, and turn the blender on. Slowly increase the speed. Blend at full speed until smooth and creamy, avout 1 minute.
    Remove the lid, and check the consistency. If the smoothie is too thick for your liking, pour in some additional water, replace the lid, and blend on high for a few more seconds. Pour the smoothie into glasses and serve immediately.

Daily Skin Care

2. Use cool or warm water and a gentle cleanser.
3. Use your hands, a baby washcloth (it's gentler than a regular one), or a cleansing brush for 30 seconds.

The types of products you can use to curb your acne include:

Cleansers. Cleansers wash away dirt, grime, makeup, and pollution, Day says. A good cleanser will also let other skin products reach your skin and work better. Choose gentle cleaners that won’t strip your skin, says Jonette Keri, MD, PhD, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Over-the-Counter Creams and Lotions. Retinoid creams or lotions can help clear your skin and also lessen wrinkles. Products made with sulfur can be good for the occasional spot treatment. Benzoyl peroxide is another acne fighter. Use benzoyl peroxide products only occasionally, because they can dry out your skin, Day says. You could also try a milder benzoyl peroxide product.

Cosmetics. Some cosmetics include salicylic acid, which fights acne. In general, look for skin care products that say on the label that they are noncomedogenic (which means they don't clog pores) or non-acnegenic (they don’t cause breakouts).
